FLYING SITES

(Scroll down for locations & Info)

We currently have four primary places that we fly:

Here is a small map that shows where in town most of our pilots are located. If you live close by one of us and want to get hold of us, check out the ABOUT US link and drop us an e-mail! I will be adding to this map as we add more and more local heli pilots to the group!

Johnson Elementary FIELDS (OUR PRIMARY FLYING FIELDS!!!)

Yes, it is Johnson ELEMENTARY school, NOT Johnson HIGH SCHOOL in the northern part of San Antonio!  Located 1 mile east on Bulverde Rd (1863), the fields in front of Johnson Elementary School have recently become our favorite place to fly! Chuck happened to be driving by the location some months ago and convinced a few of us to go out there and try it out!

There are two fields to fly: one on the east and one on the west, so depending on where the sun is determines which field is being used. The fields are large enough to accommodate a minimum of three pilots flying at the same time, if not more!

Parking is off the road under the trees, which makes for a nice set up to watch your fellow pilots show off their skills in the air.

The road heading to the fields is not frequently used because it primarily just feeds to the elementary school. There are two houses (that we know of) that are located behind the school so we do have to watch out for the occasional car driving by, but besides that, the location is IDEAL!

Here is a quick picture showing it's basic location. Just take HWY 281 north from 1604 approximately 10 miles, turn right on 1863 (Bulverde Rd), head east for 1 mile and the fields are located on your left (north). There are two paved roads that head up to the school, also giving access to the fields.

Look below for an arial video of the field! WooHoo!!

Texas R/C Indoor Club - San Antonio

This club was established to give R/C enthusiasts a place to fly indoors! The club meets every Wednesday night from 7 pm to 9 pm in a small gym located by Our Lady of Perpetual Help right off of I-35 (see directions below).

Eclectic helicopters AND electric planes can be flown at this location. Planes need to be less that 16 oz and helicopters should be 250 size or smaller for safety reasons. AMA membership is required to fly and there is a $3 pilot fee per night as well.

Directions: Take FM 1518 (exit 174a) off I-35 in Selma, turn north on Evans Road, Go past the church, turn left on Myers Road. The Gym is located across from the ball fields on Myers Road.

Here is a quick video of some of the guys flying in the gym.

North East - Kitty Hawk Ultralight field

Ultralight pilots have been flying out at Kitty Hawk for years, and the gracious owner of the field allows RC pilots to come out and strut their stuff as well! As long as you have a spotter, fly in the posted fly zone, and are respectful of others, you can't beat flying here! Again, no membership fee or club fee to fly here either!

RC planes can take off and land on the paved ultra-light runway as well as helis. There is a static line flying circle south of the hangers and a HUGE open field to fly till your heart's content!

Here is a picture that will give you an idea of the field:

POTRANCO FIELD - West San Antonio

The Potranco Field is an undeveloped industrial park field located at Hwy 151 & Potranco (about a mile away from Sea World). This is not an "official" field because of it's location, but there has been no development on the property in the past two years and there is PLENTY of room to fly! Be sure to call or e-mail to see if anyone is going to be out there before you go or you might be flying "Solo"!

Bulverde Community Park - Northern San Antonio

This park used to be our primary field, but because the park started getting used by other groups, it became too dangerous to fly our bigger size helicopters there on the weekend. It is still a viable field to meet at during the week when it might not be busy, but the Johnson Elem fields are just as close to HWY 281 as Bulverde Park, so for safety reasons, we really don't fly there that much anymore.

Bulverde Community Park is located directly across the street from the Bulverde Air Park on Bulverde Lane. It is only a short 15 minute drive north of 1604 on HWY 281 The address is: 29890 Bulverde Ln, Bulverde, TX‎.

CBC Indoor Gym Flying (Community Bible Church)

Community Bible Church has recently opened up it's gymnasium to indoor flying enthusiasts every Saturday from Noon-2:00 pm. As a "club", we have not checked it out as of yet, but plan on finding out about it this Saturday, February 6th. I will be putting more information about the site, including rules, requirements and regulations as soon as we try it out.

Community Bible church is located on the Westbound 1604 access road between Redland & Gold Canyon roads. You can access the church directly if you turn north on Gold canyon off of the 1604 access road and follow the winding road down to the main church facility. The gymnasium is basically located northwest of the main sanctuary. Check back here in a couple of weeks for more information.
